Which glasses frames suit my shape of face?

    By Dominik | b | 0 comment | 1 July, 2016 | 0

If you’re wondering “what glasses suit my face shape”, then you’re in the right place. We know from experience that not all glasses go with every face shape. So we put together this little guide to make your glasses choice easier for you.

To determine the shape of your face, look at the face from the hairline to the chin. Then divide it into three parts. The upper third: forehead; the middle: eye area, ears and nose; the lower: mouth and chin area. The best way to determine the shape of your face is by standing in front of a mirror, taking your hair out of your face (if there is any) and drawing around the shape of your face (not of your head) with a lipstick on the mirror. In general, there are five main face shapes.

Find the Best Glasses for Your Face Shape

What glasses suit my face shape

    Glasses Shape for Round Faces

Round faces have a soft outline and appear circular. If you have this shape face, opt for a glasses shape that elongates the face, such as a square shape or narrow, oval lenses. More top-heavy frames with a thin and delicate lower rim, such as browline frames, can also work well as they accentuate the eye area and balance the facial features.

    Glasses Shape for Oval Faces

Oval faces have a smooth shape with a softly rounded chin and strong cheekbones. They are narrow and long with balanced contours. In terms of glasses, the oval face is easy going as it works with almost all frame shapes. Nevertheless, you should pay attention to the ratio between vertical and horizontal lines. As a rule of thumb, the narrower the face, the more delicate the glasses frame should be.

    Glasses for Heart-Shaped Faces

Heart-shaped faces have a broad forehead and eye-area, high cheekbones and towards the chin a notably narrowing contour. The lower half appears pointed. Round, oval or curved frame shapes go well with heart-shaped faces and soften the face. Square frames, especially ones that get broader towards the top, and rimless or delicate frames can also harmonise the heart-shaped face. Extra tip: make sure the arms of the glasses aren’t too large or dominant and that they are attached to the lenses in the centre or at the lower part of the lens.

    Glasses for Angular Face Shapes

Angular or square faces are long and narrow with a square forehead and jawline, even with square cheekbones. Round or oval frames can balance out the long shape and make the face appear softer.  Glasses with an upwardly rising lens contour can also work well. If the face resembles a rectangle, glasses with higher lenses are recommended. If the face tends to have more of a square shape, lenses that go lower down on the face would be the wiser choice. Both prominent and delicate styles, such as cat-eye, butterfly or round frames, work well with this face shape.

    Glasses for Trapezoidal Face Shapes

This face shape has a wide cheek and chin area. The forehead area seems rather narrow in comparison to the chin area. An oval, square or curved glasses frame that gets wider towards the top of the lenses works well. This way, the upper part of the face is emphasised and has a balancing effect. You can also go for glasses with broad or bold upper rims, attached high or centre on the lenses to visually broaden the narrow forehead and temples. Low lenses support this effect.

Now that you have an idea of which glasses frame suits your shape face, maybe you want to start thinking about colour? Then just head over to our blog post on choosing the perfect frame colour to suit your style!
